With Valentine’s Day a little over a week away, I wanted to highlight some yummy treats. Anyone who knows me, knows my sweet tooth is insane. It just so happens I’ve met a couple of people who feel the same. And they’ve turned their passion of creating sweets (whatever they may be) into sweet success.
The Sweet Transition
Melvin Roberson
Owner: Dough Boy Donuts Food Truck
Fort Worth, Texas
Melvin Roberson, an avid cereal lover, quit his job a week ago, to be fully invested in Dough Boy Dounts, his food truck in Fort Worth, Texas. Although it was a pretty huge leap, with support and help from his family, Roberson is making some pretty big strides already, having only been open since November. The reason? Quality. Dough Boy Donuts aren’t too cakey or airy, with flavors are that have just the right amount of sweet, without being too overbearing. My favorite happens to be the Fairy Dust, which has a lemon zest glaze and ground Skittles. But the majority of the donuts have a cereal finish! And Roberson is just getting started, with plans of opening up the menu to items like sandwiches and burgers in the future.
The High School SweetHeart
Yolonda Turner
Owner: Cupcake Fetish
St. Louis, MO
The last time I’ve seen Yolonda Turner was in high school, almost ten years ago. And that’s something we actually giggled (and were kind of shocked) about when I talked to her. Although I don’t live in St. Louis anymore it’s where I grew up, and I love to shed light on the positive that’s going on there; especially when it comes to food. When I saw that Yolonda started up Cupcake Fetish about three years ago, I kept up with her moves. And she’s definitely making ‘em. But it wasn’t easy. Turner told me one of the biggest hurdles, besides putting up all call cash for the business (no loans), was accepting help and being hands-off to something she built from the ground up – even though she still works full-time. But after accruing a quality staff, a lot of weight was lifting off her shoulders. Giving her enough time to find a store front for her business, which is set open its doors Spring 2016! In the meantime, Cupcake Fetish is taking orders on-line and catering special events.
These testimonies give a new meaning to a sweet victory!
